There has been a tussle between Google and the European Union (EU) for quite some time. Due to Google's online advertising business, the EU had imposed a fine of 1.49 billion euros (1.66 billion dollars) on it. Google approached the court against this fine and now the decision has come in its favor.

What is the matter

The EU, a group of 27 countries, imposed a heavy fine on Google in 2019 for its one-sided dominance in the online advertising business. It said that due to Google's policy, advertisers and website owners have very few options. In such a situation, they are forced to accept Google's terms, due to which they often suffer losses. With this argument, the EU imposed a heavy fine on Google.

Google had filed a petition in the EU's General Court against this fine. In its argument, Google told the court that the Commission had made some mistakes while investigating Google's policy and other things. Along with this, the commission was also not able to tell the court what is Google's mistake in this case and what problem it causes to the website and advertisers.
Google will not have to pay the fine
While hearing the case, the court has given its verdict in favor of Google and waived the fine of 1.49 billion euros. Earlier, recently also the EU Court had heard the matter regarding the fine on Google's dominance. However, Google did not get any relief in this case.
Google's response
Google respected this decision and said that the court has given its verdict after closely understanding the mistakes of the commission. The tech giant also said that the case in which it was fined by the commission was dropped in 2016 itself. This legal victory of Google will be beneficial for it in many cases.
